BAI: My Story of Hope

I am from a small, poor village in the Northeastern region of my country. Growing up, my family was so poor that we didn’t even have a roof. As a young girl, I remember my family huddling under a blanket when it snowed so we wouldn’t freeze. When I was a teenager, I traveled 22 hours to leave my village and move to the city for work. All alone in the big city I was quickly overwhelmed. I had no one to turn to and was drawn into a brothel. While I was working in the brothels, a Starfish Project outreach team came and visited me. The outreach team offered me a job making jewelry at Starfish Project. I was nervous to leave but when I did I found a family at Starfish Project and I’ve been working here since then.

Today, I am Starfish Project’s Design Quality Control Manager. I inspect our raw materials as they arrive from the supplier. I also create the blue prints that teach the Production Staff how to make each piece of jewelry. I work closely with Jenny, our Founder, to create the samples of all new designs, and I also get to teach new technical skills to the women in Production.

Coming to Starfish Project has changed my life. Some of my most significant memories have been my counseling sessions. They have helped me in so many areas. The biggest impact has been on my attitude and outlook on life. Since joining Starfish Project, I have become a more mature and patient person. I am now able to control my emotions, and I feel like I am a better mother because of all I have learned. My daughter will not have the same life that I did. Starfish Project has helped me change my families future.
